Introducing Food For Independence Pilot Program

Volunteers serving recipients at the Earle Baum Center of the Blind

The Redwood Empire Food Bank is proud to introduce the Food for Independence pilot program—a pivotal initiative aimed at supporting individuals with disabilities in our community.

The decision to launch this program is rooted in the understanding of the unique challenges that people with disabilities face, particularly when it comes to employment opportunities. Despite their talents, skills, and determination, individuals with disabilities often encounter barriers in the workforce, leading to financial hardships. This increased vulnerability makes them more susceptible to food insecurity and hunger, and causes a greater reliance on assistance programs to meet their basic needs.

Through the Food for Independence program, we aim to address this pressing issue by offering essential food resources tailored to the specific needs of those with disabilities. By ensuring consistent access to nutritious groceries, we hope to alleviate the burden of hunger, allowing these individuals to focus on their personal growth and well-being.

To make this pilot program a success, we’re calling on our community to join us in this mission. We welcome ideas, financial support, and volunteer efforts to ensure that no one faces food insecurity due to barriers related to disabilities. Please contact Director of Programs, Allison Goodwin, for more information at agoodwin@refb.org or 707-523-7900.

Together, we can create a more compassionate and inclusive community where individuals of all abilities are given the chance to achieve greater independence and a better quality of life. Join us in this meaningful journey towards a more equitable future by supporting the Food for Independence pilot program today.
