Cranksgiving: Pedaling to End Hunger

The world’s largest food drive on two wheels puts food on tables for the holidays.

(Sebastopol, CA) The idea is simple: collect food and do it on a bicycle. The rules are minimal: be safe and have fun. The cause is an excellent one, and on November 7th, from 1pm-4pm, cyclists of all ages and abilities will gather to collect food for our local food pantries.

Cranksgiving started as a friendly competition between bike messengers in New York City in 1999, and has since grown into a movement that has swept cycling communities around the world. Nationally, Cranksgiving events generate more than a million meals for families in need each year. This is Sebastopol’s first Cranksgiving ride.

In the form of an alleycat race, cyclists will stop at various local grocers to collect items on a manifest, taking any route they choose, then meeting up at the finish line to donate the food, money raised and enjoy some more fun including an awards ceremony. All food donations will benefit the Redwood Empire Food Bank.
