Lori’s Heart in Action: A Story of Purpose, Connection, and Impact
Lori Alexander-Winkler never imagined that a few volunteer hours would transform into a profound calling. But one afternoon at the Food Connections Market, something happened that shifted her perspective forever. As she organized the shelves, a representative from a local shelter approached, their cart loaded with fresh produce, proteins, and pantry essentials. As they prepared to leave, they turned to Lori with a heartfelt smile and a simple yet powerful thank you: "This will help so many people feel cared for." In that moment, Lori understood—this was exactly where she was meant to be.
For Lori, volunteering isn't just about giving time; it's about fostering purpose, creating positive change, and making genuine connections. Growing up in Sonoma County, Lori has always had a deep love for her community, but it was through volunteering that she gained a deeper understanding of the food insecurity facing her neighbors. "I wanted to use my time to make a real difference," Lori reflected. "Food insecurity is something I care deeply about."
Her volunteer journey led her to the Redwood Empire Food Bank’s Food Connections Market, a vital hub serving 150 partner organizations across five counties—Sonoma, Lake, Mendocino, Humboldt, and Del Norte. These partners rely on the Market for discounted wholesale food, enabling them to stretch their budgets and serve more people in need. Each year, the Redwood Empire Food Bank provides $24 million worth of food—equivalent to 8.2 million meals—helping local shelters, pantries, and group homes continue their mission to fight hunger.
At the heart of the Market, Lori’s attention to detail and dedication shine. She ensures the space is organized, inviting, and easy to navigate. Volunteers like Lori go beyond logistics—they create an environment where partners can shop for their participants just as they would for themselves, selecting both staple and unique ingredients. With Lori’s help, the Market isn't just a store; it’s a space where connections are made, relationships are built, and collaboration is encouraged. Whether she’s offering a helpful tip to a partner or acting as a personal shopping assistant, Lori’s approach is always rooted in understanding and compassion.
Her work, however, extends far beyond shelves and inventory. Lori’s infectious warmth and enthusiasm uplift everyone around her. She’s known for her smile, her positivity, and her ability to make everyone feel welcome—whether they’re new volunteers or seasoned partners. In her 500 hours of service, Lori has not only made the Market a more organized and efficient space but has also helped to foster a spirit of camaraderie and support among the volunteers and partners.
A Passion for Service, Connection, and Growth
"I’ve gained such a deeper understanding of the struggles others face," Lori shared. "It’s important to me to be friendly, helpful, and to treat everyone with respect. Volunteering here has also allowed me to apply many of the skills I’ve developed throughout my career."
Lori’s contributions go beyond the physical space—she’s cultivated a culture of kindness and connection that has enriched both her and those she serves. "Volunteering has given me a sense of fulfillment," she said. "I’m always happy to be here, and I leave feeling accomplished. Plus, I’ve made some great friends along the way." Lori’s admiration for the food bank staff is equally heartfelt: "The teamwork, strong work ethic, and sense of humor make working here a joy."
For anyone considering volunteering, Lori has a simple message: "Just do it." Her story is a testament to the power of giving one’s time and energy to a cause bigger than oneself—proof that volunteering creates a meaningful impact on both the giver and the receiver.
