A Poetic Perspective: The Redwood Empire Food Bank Through Volunteer Eyes

Darlene Pepper at a distribution site

At the Redwood Empire Food Bank, we’re constantly inspired by the passion and creativity of our volunteers. Recently, Darlene Pepper, one of our dedicated distribution site volunteers, shared a beautiful poem with one of our Programs Coordinators. Her heartfelt words perfectly capture the spirit of our mission and the impact we create together. It was too special not to share, so we’re thrilled to present it to you here. Thank you, Darlene, for putting into words what so many of us feel!

“The Food Bank” by Darlene Pepper

In the early morning, I make my way to the food bank distribution site,

with the intention of giving out food to the hungry, it is a Human Right!

We put on our bright yellow vests, our gloves and box cutter in hand,

and prepare all the food, plus dry goods and canned.

There are senior boxes, bread, produce, eggs and chicken. There is so much to give.

Feeding hundreds of families gives us all a purpose to live.

Rain or shine, there is a walk-up line, and so many volunteers have put in their time.

With bags or carts, we fill them full of good food and I'm sure it puts everyone in a good mood!

For the drive thru folks, we will lift the back lid or open the trunk,

load up all their groceries, wish them a wonderful day... it's a slam dunk!

The Food Bank is fortunate to get donations from different organizations,

that have been feeding the hungry for generations.

The volunteers arrive on time each shift we sign up for with smiles on our faces and positive attitudes,

because we all know in our hearts that the recipients are full of gratitude!

Thank you, food bank, for helping feed and meet the needs of hungry people in our

community, it brings a greater sense of unity,

and gives us volunteers the opportunity!
