When David Irvine began volunteering at the Redwood Empire Food Bank in early 2020, it was during one of the most challenging periods in recent memory. The COVID-19 pandemic was unfolding, and its ripple effects were profoundly felt across the community. Concerned about how unemployment would exacerbate food insecurity, David sought to be part of the solution.
“The Redwood Empire Food Bank had a long history of helping people in need,” David shares. “But I knew hunger was going to grow exponentially, and I wanted to help.”
From the very start, David found joy and purpose in his volunteer work. Seeing the smiling faces of the people served and hearing heartfelt “Thank you!” responses reaffirmed that his efforts were making a tangible difference.
“I’m amazed at the incredible organization of the food bank,” he says. “From acquiring the needed food to overcoming the challenges of distribution, the Redwood Empire Food Bank does heroic work!”
Over the years, David has taken on a variety of roles to support the Redwood Empire Food Bank’s mission. He has primarily volunteered at several food distribution sites across Sonoma and Santa Rosa but has also contributed his time at the warehouse and during special events, such as the food drive at the Sonoma County Fair. This past summer, David expanded his efforts by delivering meals to children through our Summer Lunch program. In this role, he picked up meals prepared by the Santa Rosa City Schools kitchen and delivered them to designated locations in Sonoma, ensuring that kids had access to nourishing meals during the summer months.
David’s dedication and enthusiasm are inspiring, and his commitment to the mission of alleviating hunger continues to drive his volunteerism.
“I look forward to continuing to volunteer,” David says with a smile.
We are incredibly grateful for volunteers like David, whose compassion and hard work help us bring hope and nourishment to our community daily.
